Summary

The Trellis is a support for climbing plants and the mod's first crop. Cotton grows on it today, and it is the farming answer to hunting spiders for fibre: grown in a field instead of being knocked out of mobs. The name is deliberately generic — the support is meant for future plants too. The trellis stands two blocks tall — the plant climbs it. Place it on tilled soil, then right-click it with cotton seeds. From there the plant lives in two phases:

slowly climbs the support until it wraps both blocks.

right-click, and it fills again. The point: harvesting never destroys the plant. Right-clicking a ripe bush takes the cotton and returns it to its grown, boll-free state — patience is the price of the plant itself, not of every harvest.

Growing

Both phases only advance under two conditions:

If the soil dries out or the light goes, growth pauses: the stage is never lost, the plant never dies and never reverts to a seed. Restore the water and it continues from the same stage. This is deliberate — walking away from the game must not wipe out a plantation. Bone meal speeds growth up, but buys strictly one stage per use, so it cannot turn a bare trellis into a ripe bush on the spot. Plants can be packed as densely as you like: the trellis does not tick like a machine, so a large plantation costs the world nothing.

Harvesting

ActionResult
Right-click a ripe bush1–2 cotton fibre, 35 % chance of cotton seeds; the bush stays and fills again
Right-click an unripe bushnothing happens, the state does not change
Break the trellisthe trellis comes back, plus the seed if something was planted
Break tall or short grass5 % chance of cotton seeds (not while shearing — the same rule vanilla applies to wheat seeds); Fortune raises the count

Grass is the entry point into the chain: clearing a plain finds the first seeds in the same place wheat seeds come from. After that the plantation sustains itself, since harvesting returns seeds too.

Block properties

PropertyValue
Height2 blocks (lower and upper half)
Basetilled soil (#minecraft:supports_crops)
Hardness0.2 — breaks instantly by hand
Soundgrass
Collisionyes — the trellis blocks movement like a fence post
Pistondoes not move it (half a multiblock must not be torn from its pair)
Breakingboth halves go together; the trellis drops exactly once

Recipes

The trellis is sticks tied with string:

IngredientsResult
4 × stick + 2 × string1 × trellis

Balance

Growth is probabilistic: every random block tick rolls a chance to advance one stage.

ParameterValueConfig key

Fruiting stage chance1 in 4cottonFruitingChanceDivisor

Stages per fruiting cycle2
Fibre per harvest1–2
Seed chance per harvest35 %
Seed chance per grass block5 %

Rooting is deliberately three times "dearer" than fruiting: the wait is the price of the plant, not of each harvest.

Progression

Cotton fibre is the feedstock for the coming Fluxweave line: it gives the farmer the same route the spider's string gives the fighter.

Compatibility

The plant sits on vanilla farmland and follows vanilla watering rules, so any mechanic that protects farmland from being trampled covers it too. The scythe only reaps crops listed in its tag, and the trellis is not in it yet.
