Iron Furnace

Summary
The Iron Furnace is an upgraded fuel furnace that sits between the vanilla furnace and the Electric Furnace. It's faster than vanilla and smelts everything vanilla does, but still runs on solid fuel (coal, planks, charcoal…) rather than EU/FE. It's an early upgrade for the player who hasn't built a power grid yet but wants to speed up smelting.
It fully reuses the vanilla furnace UI — only the title differs. Recipes and behaviour match the vanilla furnace: anything that smelts in a vanilla furnace smelts here too — the mod's ores, raw materials and metal dust included.
Mini-example: wrap a vanilla furnace in eight iron ingots → get an Iron Furnace. Smelting is noticeably faster, fuel consumption is the same. An intermediate step before the Electric Furnace.
Energy
Uses no EU/FE. Fuel is solid (as in a vanilla furnace). This is the key difference from the Electric Furnace, which runs on EU/FE.
How it's used
Placed like a normal furnace. Right-click opens the same UI (smelt slot, fuel slot, flame bar and progress arrow). It takes every vanilla smelting recipe — and the ones the mod adds: ore → ingot, raw material → ingot, metal dust → ingot, iron ingot → Tempered Iron.
What it can't do: recipes that exist only for the Electric Furnace (that one has a recipe type of its own). Today that means smelting uranium and palladium dust — available in the Electric Furnace only.
Block Properties
Cubic block with a front face (lit/unlit states — lit while working). Tier: LV (by the mod's classification — early machine), but actually runs without EU/FE. Hardness and tool: same as a vanilla furnace (stone pickaxe).
Sound
While lit, the furnace plays the vanilla fire crackle — the same ambience as the ordinary furnace (an irregular one-shot via, not a loop). No custom sample.
Recipes
Crafted at a workbench (shaped 3×3): vanilla furnace in the centre, surrounded by 8 iron ingots.

Progression
Early machine (tier-stone), no EU/FE. Slots into the chain: vanilla furnace → Iron Furnace → Electric Furnace → Induction Furnace (concept). Each step is faster than the last. Doesn't need a power grid — you can drop it in any cave/mine where you have fuel.

Electric Furnace — the next step: switching from fuel to EU/FE. Iron Chest — a sibling "upgraded vanilla" block.
