Soot
alaindustrial:soot
Summary
Soot is what is left of burnt oil. When the fire where the oil was burns out by itself, each cell has a 20 % chance to get a thin layer of soot on the floor: a ragged black blot with a brown scorched rim. The blots come in five shapes and the game turns each one its own way, so a burnt-out lake is covered in spots that look alike but are never identical.
Mini-example: you burnt an oil lake with an 80-cell bottom — about 16 blots lie on the bottom. You collect 16 soot with a shovel, and the compressor turns them into a carbon briquette.
Obtaining
- Light oil with flint and steel, or let it catch from a fire nearby. The blaze runs through the whole pool and burns out by itself within a few seconds.
- Soot settles only on a solid floor. On the bottom layer of a lake — yes; above empty space, liquid or a partial block — no.
- Fire put out by hand, with water or with a potion leaves no soot. Neither does ordinary fire that did not come from oil.
- The chance by the server setting (0 — never, 1 — always).
Block Properties
- Soot layer — thin, up to 3 pixels at the centre of the blot. You can walk through it, like through a thin layer of snow.
- Anything breaks it almost instantly, but only a shovel drops soot. By hand or with a pickaxe the layer simply vanishes.
- It holds on a solid floor: remove the block under it and the layer disappears. Flowing liquid and a piston also wash the layer away without dropping soot.
- You cannot place the layer by hand: the Soot item cannot be put into the world.
Recipes
- 16 soot → 1 carbon briquette — compressor, 260 EU/FE.
This is a second route to the briquette, next to firing it in the alloy smelter. It is cheaper in energy but slow to gather: one lake gives one or two briquettes, and the oil burns away for good.
Progression
Soot is available as soon as you have found oil and built a compressor — earlier than the Recycler and the alloy smelter that the slag briquette needs.
