Summary

Mutation chips are three items that switch the Incubator between its working modes. The chip goes into a slot of its own; an empty slot means the machine will not start at all — it never picks a mode by itself.

A chip is never consumed: build it once and it works forever. What gets spent is uranium and EU/FE; the chip only tells the machine what to do with the input.

Duplication chip — get a second copy of an item. Transformation chip — trade an item for one of equal worth: lapis for redstone, sapling for sapling. Creation chip — grow a unique mod material out of a vanilla item.

Mini-example: with the duplication chip in place, diamonds turn into copies. Swap it for the creation chip and that same diamond becomes an irradiated diamond. Same machine, same input, different result.

Energy

Chips neither store nor draw energy. The whole cost of an attempt sits with the Incubator: uranium as charge, plus EU/FE by mode.

How it is used

The chip occupies the Incubator's top-left slot. While it is empty, the status line says outright what is missing. Swapping a chip mid-run resets the progress of the current attempt, so change modes between runs rather than halfway through one.

Automation can put a chip in but not take one out: the slot allows push and forbids pull, otherwise a pipe would yank the chip out mid-operation. More than one chip will not fit.

Recipes

All three are crafted around an empty chip, and all three have a uranium plate at the base — the chip has to withstand the very irradiation the Incubator runs on.

ChipWhat goes in
Duplicationtwo amethysts flanking the empty chip, uranium plate below
Transformationredstone and lapis flanking the empty chip, uranium plate below
Creationa diamond and an echo shard flanking the empty chip, uranium plate below

The creation chip is the dearest of the three: echo shards only come from an ancient city, and that is a deliberate gate in front of the strongest mode.

Progression

They need a uranium plate, which means the nuclear branch: uranium first, mutations after. The duplication chip is the cheapest way into the machine; the creation chip unlocks materials that drop and craft nowhere else. None of the three is consumed, so the full set is built once per playthrough.

Incubator — the only machine that reads them. Empty Chip — the blank all three are built on. Uranium Ore — where the plate at the base comes from.
