Summary

The Shielding Chest is a lead-lined box of 36 slots — the only place in the world where radioactive material can sit without irradiating anybody. It needs no energy.

It is not the next storage tier: it holds exactly as much as the Iron Chest, and that is deliberate. You buy it for what it stops, not for what it fits; if you want room, buy a Silver or Gold chest instead.

Mini-example: finished refining uranium and want to take the shielding suit off? Before this chest there was nowhere to put the fuel: in your pockets it kills you, on the floor it keeps radiating. Put it in here and the suit can come off.

What it is for

Since refined uranium is lethal in your inventory and keeps radiating if you throw it away. Between refining it and loading it into the reactor there was physically nowhere to keep it: either wear the suit around the clock, or own no fuel.

An ordinary chest does not help. A vanilla chest, a barrel and every storage chest in this mod let radiation straight through: uranium inside irradiates its surroundings exactly as if it were lying on the floor. The shielding chest is the single exception, and that is the whole block.

An ordinary chest leaks with a CEILING: however much uranium goes in, no more than four items' worth gets out. Standing against one makes you queasy at once and lethal in about half a minute; three blocks away it takes two minutes, and past four blocks it is close to harmless. The cap is deliberate — without it a chest of uranium killed instantly across the whole radius, which is a trap rather than a hazard.

The shielding chest, by contrast, is total and depends on neither distance nor walls: its contents simply do not count as a source. The lid makes no difference either — an open shielding chest shields exactly as well as a closed one (the lead is in the walls, not in the latch).

The chest has a portable counterpart — the Shielding Pouch: the same principle, but in a single inventory slot and holding 128 weight instead of 36 slots. The chest stays the warehouse; the pouch is what the ore rides in from the seam to the warehouse without irradiating the miner on the way.

⚠️ It shields its CONTENTS, not the room. The chest stops only what is inside it. A fuelled reactor column nearby and uranium dropped on the floor still radiate; the answer to those is the room's shell and the suit.

Inventory

Takes any items — 36 slots in 4 rows of 9. Shift-click moves stacks between the chest and your inventory. There is no filter for radioactive things: it is an ordinary chest that happens not to glow.

Interface

A normal container window — no energy or progress bars. The panel is the iron chest's: this mod's chest windows differ only in the number of rows, and this one has four.

Double Chest

Two shielding chests placed side by side, facing the same way, merge into one double chest of 72 slots, following the vanilla placement rules. The shielding survives the merge: both halves stay shielded. It never pairs with another tier, like every other chest.

The double's window shows 6 rows; the rest are reached with the scrollbar. Lid and sound are shared: both halves lift together and the sound plays once, from the seam. Automation sees the double as one container: a hopper, dropper or item pipe that fills one half carries on into the other. Breaking one half returns the other to a single chest.

⚠️ A broken chest stops shielding instantly. Its contents spill on the floor and start radiating like any uranium on the ground. Breaking a chest full of fuel while standing next to it without a suit is a bad idea.

Block properties

A squat chest block. Breaks with any pickaxe, drops itself and spills its contents.

Appearance

Told apart from the storage chests at a glance, on purpose: dark lead plate instead of bright steel, the teal rivets of the reactor casing, a yellow-and-black hazard stripe around the lid and across the front. The top face is left plain. The colours are taken from the mod's own existing textures — the reactor shell and refined uranium — so the block reads as part of the nuclear line rather than as one more chest.

Recipes

An iron chest and four shielding plates in a cross — the same material the reactor room's shell is made of. Contents are preserved when you upgrade.

Shielding Pouch — the portable counterpart: the same shielding of the contents, in a single inventory slot. Shielding Suit — the wearable defence; this chest is what removes the need to wear it around the clock. Reactor Casing — the same shielding alloy, as a wall. Reactor Column — what the stored fuel is kept for. Iron Chest — the same capacity without the shielding.
