Summary

The Electric Chainsaw is the mod's second powered hand tool and the wood-side mirror of the Electric Drill: an axe that runs on EU/FE instead of durability. With charge it cuts faster than a diamond axe (speed 9.0 against 8.0) and spends 30 EU/FE per block. A full buffer is 10 000 EU/FE — about 333 blocks on one charge.

Mini-example: fell a tree, then clear its canopy at the same speed — a third tool rule puts #minecraft:leaves on the axe, which vanilla files under the hoe. When the chainsaw runs flat it doesn't stop; it just cuts at hand speed until you recharge, with the same drops the whole time.

Like the mod's other EU/FE items, the chainsaw has no durability and never breaks: the bar under the icon shows EU/FE charge (gold), not wear. It charges where the Energy Pack does — in the Battery Box charge slot and from a worn pack.

Energy

Its own EU/FE buffer, outside the energy network. Charges in the Battery Box slot and from a worn pack; spends charge cutting.

Instant-break blocks — leaves in most configurations, saplings, vines — are free, just as they never wear a vanilla axe. In creative no EU/FE is spent.

How it behaves

Cutting: with at least 30 EU/FE it cuts #minecraft:mineable/axe and #minecraft:leaves at speed 9.0. Each such block costs 30 EU/FE. Flat chainsaw: below 30 EU/FE it cuts at hand speed (1.0) but keeps its mining level and drops, and spends nothing. Efficiency does not apply there — vanilla only grants it above speed 1.0. Charging: the Battery Box charge slot and a worn Energy Pack both accept it automatically, up to 32 EU/FE/t. Attack: hits like a diamond axe (6 damage, 1.0 attack speed); attacking spends no EU/FE and causes no wear. Enchanting: it sits in #minecraft:axes, so the table and anvil treat it as an axe. Readout: the bar shows charge; the tooltip reads the exact numbers, or a red "Empty" at zero, and the texture switches to its unpowered variant. Log stripping is not supported. Vanilla stripping lives in AxeItem.useOn, and extending AxeItem would drag in Properties.axe(...), which sets MAX_DAMAGE and makes the tool breakable — the opposite of the "EU/FE only, never breaks" model. Strip with an ordinary axe.

Recipes

The drill's frame with a diamond axe in the middle instead of a diamond pickaxe: iron ingots on top, two batteries at the sides, two copper coils and an electronic circuit below. Charge held by the batteries carries over into the finished chainsaw. The recipe unlocks once you obtain a copper coil, an electronic circuit or a diamond axe.

Repair is not applicable — there is no durability; "repair" means recharging.

Diamond tip (upgrade)

The Diamond-Tipped Electric Chainsaw (is the chainsaw's second tier and the wood-side mirror of the Diamond-Tipped Electric Drill. Exactly two things differ from the base chainsaw; everything else is inherited unchanged.

1. It cuts faster. Speed 10.5 against the base chainsaw's 9.0 — the same step the drill took (8.5 → 10.0). The speed-up covers wood and leaves alike, because on the chainsaw the two sit on one and the same tool rule. The mining tier does not change — the upgrade makes the work faster, it does not unlock new blocks.

2. Switchable Silk Touch for leaves. Sneak + right-click flips the drop mode:

normal mode (what a freshly crafted chainsaw starts in) — leaves drop as usual: saplings, sticks, the occasional apple; Silk Touch mode — the leaf block drops as itself, whole.

Why that is worth having: in vanilla the only way to collect whole leaf blocks is shears, and shears are a separate item you have to keep in your hotbar and swap in by hand for every canopy. The tipped chainsaw does both jobs with one tool: fell the trunk, flip the mode, and harvest the canopy for decoration or topiary.

Why switchable rather than permanent: permanent Silk Touch would cost the chainsaw its saplings for good, and without saplings a felled forest cannot be replanted. The toggle removes that problem — exactly as on the drill, where permanent Silk Touch would have killed ore doubling.

The mode is visible without guesswork: while it is on, the item carries the enchantment glint and lists "Silk Touch I" in its tooltip (the mode is the real vanilla enchantment, not a separate parallel flag), and a dedicated tooltip line shows the state and reminds you of the sneak + right-click control. Switching plays a click and prints a line above the hotbar.

The converse follows too: if you enchant the upgrade with Silk Touch yourself at a table, the chainsaw honestly reports "mode on", and the toggle will switch it off. There is one state, not two that can disagree.

The mode does not affect logs. Wood drops as itself with any tool in vanilla, so Silk Touch on a trunk changes nothing. As a side effect the mode also touches the other blocks of the axe domain — mushroom blocks, the bookshelf, beehives (they drop whole, and a hive keeps its bees) — that is vanilla Silk Touch behaviour, not a separate mod mechanic.

Inherited unchanged: the 10 000 EU/FE buffer, 30 EU/FE per block, 32 EU/FE/t intake, the same charging places, no durability, hand-speed cutting when flat, creative behaviour, and the diamond-axe attack. Log stripping is unsupported on both chainsaws for the same architectural reason (see "How it behaves").

Recipe: — the base chainsaw in the centre, a row of three diamond dust above it (the "tip coating" itself), two bronze ingots at its sides (the body), and a gold gear below (the chain drive). The materials deliberately differ from the drill's (invar and a silver gear) so that the two upgrade branches do not pull on the same shortage.

Charge survives the upgrade. The chainsaw's recipe uses the type — the same one the drill and the base powered tools use — so the EU/FE in the chainsaw you put in moves into the result instead of burning away. The auto-fill button (the recipe book, and the "+" in REI/JEI) still will not find a charged chainsaw: vanilla looks for an item whose components exactly match the display stack, and the display shows an empty chainsaw. Lay the grid out by hand — it works with a chainsaw in any state.

Progression

The second powered tool after the Electric Drill: the drill covers stone, the chainsaw covers wood. Needs LV infrastructure first — without the Battery Box and a battery it can be neither crafted nor charged. LV tier. The remaining electric tools (hoe/saber/nano bow) are future work.

Electric Drill — the stone half of the pair; the same no-durability EU/FE contract. Energy Pack — charges the chainsaw right in your inventory. Battery Box — charges the chainsaw (charge slot). Electronic Circuit — a crafting component.
